Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in F5 3-DNS Controller up to 4.6.3. This affects the function slc_add_reply of the component Telnet Client SLC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the slc_add_reply function in various BSD-based Telnet clients, when handling LINEMODE suboptions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a reply with a large number of Set Local Character (SLC) commands.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2005. The weakness was released 07/20/2005 by Gaël Delalleau with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at tech.f5.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0469 since 02/18/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19270 (Debian DSA-765-1 : heimdal - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38522 (Multiple Vendor Telnet Client Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at f5.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3561.
