Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Technote 2000/2001/Pro. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file main.cgi. The manipulation of the argument filename with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in main.cgi in Technote allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack in the filename parameter.
The weakness was shared 02/12/2001 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0075. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10584 (Technote main.cgi filename Parameter Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1051. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 816.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5813), Exploit-DB (20523), Tenable (10584), SecurityFocus (BID 2156†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1922†). The entry VDB-16408 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
