Sun Solaris up to 8.0 FTP Server glob LIST memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Sun Solaris up to 8.0 (Operating System) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function glob of the component FTP Server. The manipulation of the argument LIST with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap overflow in FTP daemon in Solaris 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by creating a long pathname and calling the LIST command, which uses glob to generate long strings.

The weakness was released 06/18/2001 by John McDonald as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0249. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/07/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10821 (Multiple FTPD glob Command Arbitrary Command Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27068 (Sun Solaris FTPd glob() Expansion LIST Heap Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6332), Tenable (10821), SecurityFocus (BID 2550†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1408†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-16769 and VDB-16770. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
