A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Word 97/98/2000/2001 (Word Processing Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RTF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Microsoft Word before Word 2002 allows attackers to automatically execute macros without warning the user via a Rich Text Format (RTF) document that links to a template with the embedded macro.
The weakness was presented 06/27/2001 with Microsoft as MS01-028 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0240. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 2002 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS01-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
