A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun iPlanet Directory Server up to 5.0 beta (Directory Service Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component LDAP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflows in iPlanet Directory Server 4.1.4 and earlier (LDAP) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated by the PROTOS LDAPv3 test suite.
The weakness was presented 07/16/2001 with CERT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1307. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
