NetWin Authentication module (NWAuth) 2.0 and 3.0b, as implemented in SurgeFTP, DMail, and possibly other packages, uses weak password hashing, which could allow local users to decrypt passwords or use a different password that has the same hash value as the correct password.

The weakness was shared 07/20/2001 by ByteRage (Website). The advisory is shared for download at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1354. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
