A vulnerability was found in Netwin DMail and SurgeFTP (version now known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component NWAuth 2.0/3.0. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. NetWin Authentication module (NWAuth) 2.0 and 3.0b, as implemented in SurgeFTP, DMail, and possibly other packages, uses weak password hashing, which could allow local users to decrypt passwords or use a different password that has the same hash value as the correct password.
The weakness was shared 07/20/2001 by ByteRage (Website). The advisory is shared for download at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1354. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
