A vulnerability has been found in phpBB 1.0.0/1.2.0/1.2.1/1.4.0 (Forum Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file prefs.php/auth.php. The manipulation of the argument l_statsblock/l_privnotify with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

prefs.php in phpBB 1.4.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary PHP code via an invalid language value, which prevents the variables (1) $l_statsblock in prefs.php or (2) $l_privnotify in auth.php from being properly initialized, which can be modified by the user and later used in an eval statement.

The weakness was shared 07/31/2001 by Joao Gouveia as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1471 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:prefs.php/auth.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10389 (PHPBB Arbitrary Command Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
