Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component lsfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
lsfs in AIX 4.x allows a local user to gain additional privileges by creating Trojan horse programs named (1) grep or (2) lslv in a certain directory that is under the user s control, which cause lsfs to access the programs in that directory.
The issue has been introduced in 01/01/1994. The weakness was published 02/23/2001 by IBM as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0573. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2610 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7007), SecurityFocus (BID 6741†), OSVDB (5582†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22083†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
