CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Linux 6.2/7.0/7.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component lpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The default configuration of the DVI print filter (dvips) in Red Hat Linux 7.0 and earlier does not run dvips in secure mode when dvips is executed by lpd, which could allow remote attackers to gain privileges by printing a DVI file that contains malicious commands.

The issue has been introduced in 04/03/2000. The weakness was shared 08/31/2001 by zen-parse (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1002. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 515 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11023 (Linux lpd DVI Print Filter (dvips) Remote Command Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38071 (Lpd Remote Command Execution via DVI Printfilter Configuration Error).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1821.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16509), Exploit-DB (21095), Tenable (11023), SecurityFocus (BID 3241†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-360†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
