Off-by-one error in the sql_error function in sql_unixodbc.c in FreeRADIUS 1.0.2.5-5, and possibly other versions including 1.0.4, might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by causing the external database query to fail. NOTE: this single issue is part of a larger-scale disclosure, originally by SUSE, which reported multiple issues that were disputed by FreeRADIUS. Disputed issues included file descriptor leaks, memory disclosure, LDAP injection, and other issues. Without additional information, the most recent FreeRADIUS report is being regarded as the authoritative source for this CVE identifier.
The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2005 with Red Hat as Bug 167676 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4744 since 03/28/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21679 (FreeBSD : freeradius -- multiple vulnerabilities (ec2f2ff5-f710-11da-9156-000e0c2e438a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117717 (CentOS Security Update for FreeRADIUS (CESA-2006:0271)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.freeradius.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22211), Tenable (21679), SecurityFocus (BID 17171†), OSVDB (19321†) and Secunia (SA16712†). The entries VDB-1736, VDB-1735, VDB-1731 and VDB-1734 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
