Cisco IOS up to 12.2 Cisco Discovery Protocol memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS up to 12.2 (Router Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Cisco Discovery Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Cisco IOS 12.2 and earlier running Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a flood of CDP neighbor announcements.

The bug was discovered 04/25/2001. The weakness was released 10/09/2001 by FX, FtR, kim0 and smoovB with Phenoelit as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1071. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at phenoelit.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 167 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17793 (Cisco IOS CDP Neighbor Announcement DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7242), Tenable (17793), SecurityFocus (BID 3412†), OSVDB (1969†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6105†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-19850. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
