A vulnerability was found in Microsoft ISA Proxy 2000 (Firewall Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Error Site Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 07/16/2003 by Brett Moore with Security-Assessment.com as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at pivx.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11492 (Sambar Server Multiple Script XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r.
Applying the patch MS03-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1497.
