Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function PerformScmStage of the component RPC DCOM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 07/16/2003 by Flashsky with The Last Stage of Delirium Research Group as MS03-039 (Website). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0605 since 07/25/2003. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
After 4 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at lists.netsys.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11798 (MS03-039: Microsoft Windows RPC DCOM Interface epmapper Pipe Hijack Local Privilege Escalation (824146) (intrusive check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68522 (Microsoft Windows DCOM RPCSS Service Vulnerabilities (MS03-039)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15512. In this case the pattern |05 00 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2341.
