A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component RPCSS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/10/2003 by Barnaby Jack (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security as MS03-039 (Website). The advisory is shared at eeye.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0715 since 09/02/2003. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 6 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at lists.netsys.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11835 (MS03-039: Microsoft RPC Interface Buffer Overrun (824146) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68522 (Microsoft Windows DCOM RPCSS Service Vulnerabilities (MS03-039)).
Applying the patch MS03-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3159. In this case the pattern |01 10 08 00 CC CC CC CC| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2349.
