Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component USB URB Driver. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2005-3055. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is preferable to disable the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component USB URB Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Linux kernel 2.6.8 to 2.6.14-rc2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel OOPS) via a userspace process that issues a USB Request Block (URB) to a USB device and terminates before the URB is finished, which leads to a stale pointer reference.
The bug was discovered 09/25/2005. The weakness was published 09/26/2005 by Harald Welte (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3055 since 09/26/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 276 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22054 (RHEL 2.1 : kernel (RHSA-2006:0579)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117692 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0579)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23773), Tenable (22054), SecurityFocus (BID 14955†), OSVDB (19702†) and Secunia (SA16969†).
