Linux Kernel 2.4.0 sockaddr_in.sin_zero memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 2.4.0. The impacted element is an unknown function. Such manipulation of the argument sockaddr_in.sin_zero leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2006-1342. In addition, an exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4.0 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument sockaddr_in.sin_zero with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

net/ipv4/af_inet.c in Linux kernel 2.4 does not clear sockaddr_in.sin_zero before returning IPv4 socket names from the (1) getsockname, (2) getpeername, and (3) accept functions, which allows local users to obtain portions of potentially sensitive memory.

The bug was discovered 03/04/2006. The weakness was presented 03/23/2006 by Pavel Kankovsky (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1342 since 03/21/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22058 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117692 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0579)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25425), Exploit-DB (27461), Tenable (22058), SecurityFocus (BID 17203†) and OSVDB (24071†). See VDB-1775, VDB-2179, VDB-2182 and VDB-2224 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
