A vulnerability was found in Francisco Burzi PHP-Nuke up to 5.3.1 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file user.php. The manipulation of the argument uname/title/letter/file/upload/fname with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in PHP-Nuke 5.3.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) uname parameter in user.php, (2) ttitle, letter and file parameters in modules.php, (3) subject, story and storyext parameters in submit.php, (4) upload parameter in admin.php and (5) fname parameter in friend.php.

The weakness was presented 12/31/2001 with isec (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at prdownloads.sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1524 since 07/14/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:user.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10442 (PostNuke Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
