Details
A vulnerability was found in Wolfram Research Mathematica 4.0/4.1 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component License Manager. The manipulation of the argument -restrict with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The License Manager (mathlm) for Mathematica 4.0 and 4.1 allows remote attackers to bypass access control (specified by the -restrict argument) and steal a license via a client request that includes the name of a host that is allowed to obtain the license.
The weakness was presented 02/13/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1058. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
