The Client Service for NetWare (CSNW) on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and Sp2, and Server 2003 SP1 and earlier, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code due to an "unchecked buffer" when processing certain crafted network messages.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2005. The weakness was released 10/11/2005 by Kostya Kortchinsky with CERT Renater as MS05-046 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1985 since 06/17/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2063 days. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90280 (Microsoft Windows Client Service For Netware Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS05-046)).
Applying the patch MS05-046 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4608. In this case the pattern |05 00 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3679.
