A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Entourage, Powerpoint and Excel on Mac (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component file:/ Handler. The manipulation with the input value //////////... leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in various Microsoft applications for Macintosh allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code by invoking the file:// directive with a large number of / characters, which affects Internet Explorer 5.1, Outlook Express 5.0 through 5.0.2, Entourage v. X and 2001, PowerPoint v. X, 2001, and 98, and Excel v. X and 2001 for Macintosh.
The bug was discovered 01/04/2002. The weakness was disclosed 04/17/2002 by Josha Bronson and Matt Conover with Microsoft as MS02-019 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0152. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 103 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying the patch MS02-019 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
