Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SQLXML ISAPI Extension content-type memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Database Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component SQLXML ISAPI Extension. The manipulation of the argument content-type with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the SQLXML ISAPI extension of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via data queries with a long content-type parameter, aka "Unchecked Buffer in SQLXML ISAPI Extension."

The bug was discovered 06/12/2002. The weakness was published 04/09/2004 by Matt Moore with WESTPOINT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0186. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11304 (MS02-030: Unchecked Buffer in SQLXML (321911)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3150. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2447.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9328), Exploit-DB (21540), Tenable (11304), SecurityFocus (BID 5004†) and OSVDB (5347†). Similar entry is available at VDB-18346. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
