A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component SQLXML. The manipulation of the argument root with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The weakness was released 07/03/2002 by Matt Moore with WESTPOINT as MS02-030 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0187. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
