Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.24/2.0.36 Chunked Encoding Transfer memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.24/2.0.36 (Web Server). Affected is an unknown function of the component Chunked Encoding Transfer Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Apache 1.3 through 1.3.24, and Apache 2.0 through 2.0.36, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a chunk-encoded HTTP request that causes Apache to use an incorrect size.

The weakness was shared 06/19/2002 by Mark Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0392. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.org. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22441 (HP-UX PHSS_33280 : HP OpenView Operations, Remote Unauthorized Access and Denial of Service (DoS) (HPSBMA02149 SSRT050968 rev.1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86352 (Apache Chunked-Encoding Memory Corruption Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1807. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1698.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9249), Exploit-DB (21559), Tenable (22441), SecurityFocus (BID 5033†) and OSVDB (838†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
