A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Skype (Unified Communication Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component VCARD Import. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Skype for Windows 1.1.x.0 through 1.4.x.83 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) callto:// and (2) skype:// links, or (3) a non-standard VCARD, possibly due to an underlying error in the SysUtils.WideFmtStr Delphi routine.
The weakness was presented 10/25/2005 by Mark Rowe with Skype (Website). The advisory is available at skype.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3265 since 10/20/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21451 (FreeBSD : skype -- multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities (70fc13d9-4ab4-11da-932d-00055d790c25)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38479 (Skype Technologies Skype Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at skype.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3171.
