A vulnerability was found in OpenBSD OpenSSH (Connectivity Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component PAM Module Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in sshd in OpenSSH 2.3.1 through 3.3 may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large number of responses during challenge response authentication when OpenBSD is using PAM modules with interactive keyboard authentication (PAMAuthenticationViaKbdInt).
The weakness was disclosed 06/26/2002 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0640. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12309 (RHEL 2.1 : openssh (RHSA-2002:131)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38357 (Red Hat OpenSSH PAMAuthenticationViaKbdInt Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1810. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1646.
