Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND 9.4.0 (Domain Name Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function in the library libc/glibc/libbind of the component DNS Resolver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the DNS resolver code used in libc, glibc, and libbind, as derived from ISC BIND, allows remote malicious DNS servers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via the stub resolvers.
The weakness was presented 07/03/2002 by Joost Pol as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0651. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13953 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : glibc (MDKSA-2002:050)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115024 (Red Hat glibc DNS Resolver Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9432), Tenable (13953), SecurityFocus (BID 5100†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4360†). See VDB-18486 and VDB-18606 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
