SGI IRIX up to 6.5.16 CDE ToolTalk Database Server _TT_TRANSACTION symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SGI IRIX. This impacts the function _TT_TRANSACTION of the component CDE ToolTalk Database Server. Performing a manipulation results in symlink. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0678. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in SGI IRIX (Operating System). This affects the function _TT_TRANSACTION of the component CDE ToolTalk Database Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

CDE ToolTalk database server (ttdbserver) allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the transaction log file used by the _TT_TRANSACTION RPC procedure.

The bug was discovered 07/10/2002. The weakness was presented 07/23/2002 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0678. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68510 (Sun Solaris Tooltalk Database Server Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9527), SecurityFocus (BID 5083†), OSVDB (4508†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22068†). See VDB-18422 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
