Details
A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function AUTH_UNIX of the component CFE ToolTalk Database Server. The manipulation of the argument descriptor with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
CDE ToolTalk database server (ttdbserver) allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary memory locations with a zero, and possibly gain privileges, via a file descriptor argument in an AUTH_UNIX procedure call, which is used as a table index by the _TT_ISCLOSE procedure.
The bug was discovered 07/10/2002. The weakness was disclosed 07/23/2002 with ISS X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0677. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10787 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68510 (Sun Solaris Tooltalk Database Server Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 588.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9526), Tenable (10787), SecurityFocus (BID 3382†), OSVDB (4504†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6293†).
