Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in PHP up to 5.0.5 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function parse_str. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in pcre_compile.c in Perl Compatible Regular Expressions (PCRE) before 6.2, as used in multiple products such as Python, Ethereal, and PHP, allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via quantifier values in regular expressions, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 08/20/2005. The weakness was published 10/31/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened-PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2491 since 08/08/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19537 (GLSA-200508-17 : libpcre: Heap integer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115305 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2005-009 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-11-29)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (19537), SecurityFocus (BID 15647†), OSVDB (18906†), Secunia (SA17371†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1014744†).
