Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Database Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Resolution Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in the Resolution Service for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via UDP packets to port 1434 in which (1) a 0x04 byte that causes the SQL Monitor thread to generate a long registry key name, or (2) a 0x08 byte with a long string causes heap corruption, as exploited by the Slammer/Sapphire worm.
The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 by David Litchfield as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0649. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in C++. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11214 (MS02-061: Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19062 (Multiple MS-SQL-2000 (MS-SQL-8 ) threats - (III)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2003. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1395.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11153), Exploit-DB (16393), Tenable (11214), SecurityFocus (BID 5310†) and Secunia (SA7945†). The entries VDB-18595, VDB-18596, VDB-18598 and VDB-18615 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
