A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Keep-Alive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The keep-alive mechanism for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (bandwidth consumption) via a "ping" style packet to the Resolution Service (UDP port 1434) with a spoofed IP address of another SQL Server system, which causes the two servers to exchange packets in an infinite loop.
The weakness was presented 07/25/2002 by David Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as MS02-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0650. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11214 (MS02-061: Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19062 (Multiple MS-SQL-2000 (MS-SQL-8 ) threats - (III)).
Applying the patch MS02-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1482.
