A vulnerability has been found in Apache Tomcat up to 5.5.11 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 to 5.5.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a large number of simultaneous requests to list a web directory that has a large number of files.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2005. The weakness was disclosed 11/04/2005 by David Maciejak (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-3510 since 11/06/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47029 (Apache Tomcat 4.x < 4.1.32 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86724 (Apache Tomcat Simultaneous Directory Listing Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tomcat.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
