Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD and NetBSD (Operating System) (unknown version) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Network File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Network File System (NFS) in FreeBSD 4.6.1 RELEASE-p7 and earlier, NetBSD 1.5.3 and earlier, and possibly other operating systems, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang) via an RPC message with a zero length payload, which causes NFS to reference a previous payload and enter an infinite loop.
The weakness was released 08/05/2002 by Mike Junk as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0830. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10219 (nfsd service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family RPC.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9772), Tenable (10219), SecurityFocus (BID 5402†), OSVDB (5072†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-3308†).
