Details
A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library libc of the component TCP Timeout Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The Sun RPC functionality in multiple libc implementations does not provide a time-out mechanism when reading data from TCP connections, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang).
The bug was discovered 11/04/2002. The weakness was published 11/12/2002 by FIRST with CERT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1265. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16911 (HP-UX PHNE_29449 : s700_800 11.22 ONC/NFS General Release/Performance Patch), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
