Linux Kernel up to 2.6.14.1 sysctl.c resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2709. The attack needs to be done within the local network. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.14.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file sysctl.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The sysctl functionality (sysctl.c) in Linux kernel before 2.6.14.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel oops) and possibly execute code by opening an interface file in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/, waiting until the interface is unregistered, then obtaining and modifying function pointers in memory that was used for the ctl_table.

The bug was discovered 11/09/2005. The weakness was shared 11/09/2005 by Al Viro with Kernel Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2709 since 08/26/2005. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21133 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:059)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117771 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0140)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23040), Exploit-DB (26489), Tenable (21133), SecurityFocus (BID 15365†) and OSVDB (20676†). The entries VDB-1833, VDB-1997, VDB-19827 and VDB-23857 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
