The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) allows local users to cause a denial of service via an IGMP membership report to a target s Ethernet address instead of the Multicast group address, which causes the target to stop sending reports to the router and effectively disconnect the group from the network.
The bug was discovered 06/14/2002. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-2185 since 11/16/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 200 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
