ISS BlackICE Agent 3.1.eal/3.1.ebh Connection tcp.maxconnections memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ISS BlackICE Agent 3.1.eal/3.1.ebh. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Connection Handler. The manipulation of the argument tcp.maxconnections with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The default configuration of BlackICE Agent 3.1.eal and 3.1.ebh has a high tcp.maxconnections setting, which could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of connections to the BlackICE system that consumes more resources than intended by the user.

The weakness was presented 10/04/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0957. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12114 (ISS BlackICE Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9405), Tenable (12114), SecurityFocus (BID 1389†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4089†).
