Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in ISS Proventia and RealSecure (affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component PAM SMB Reassembler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the ISS Protocol Analysis Module (PAM), as used in certain versions of RealSecure Network 7.0 and Server Sensor 7.0, Proventia A, G, and M Series, RealSecure Desktop 7.0 and 3.6, RealSecure Guard 3.6, RealSecure Sentry 3.6, BlackICE PC Protection 3.6, and BlackICE Server Protection 3.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an SMB packet containing an authentication request with a long username.
The weakness was presented 02/26/2004 by Jack Barnaby with eEye Digital Security (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0193. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/13/2025).
We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12114 (ISS BlackICE Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34019 (ISS Protocol Analysis Module SMB Parsing Heap Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at iss.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2401. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2701.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15207), Tenable (12114), SecurityFocus (BID 9752†), OSVDB (4702†) and Secunia (SA10988†). snia.org is providing further details.
