Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.6 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Event Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla before 1.4.2 executes Javascript events in the context of a new page while it is being loaded, allowing it to interact with the previous page (zombie document) and enable cross-domain and cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, as demonstrated using onmousemove events.
The bug was discovered 12/02/2003. The weakness was disclosed 02/25/2004 by Andreas Sandblad with Secunia Research as Bug 227417 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0191. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is possible to download the exploit at bugzilla.mozilla.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 85 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12478 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 : mozilla (RHSA-2004:110)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15322), Tenable (12478), SecurityFocus (BID 9747†), OSVDB (4062†) and Secunia (SA10980†). Additional details are provided at securityfocus.com. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
