W3C Jigsaw 2.2 Host Header cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in W3C Jigsaw 2.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Host Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in W3C Jigsaw Proxy Server before 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary script via a URL that contains a reference to a nonexistent host followed by the script, which is included in the resulting error message.

The bug was discovered 08/10/2001. The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2002 by Hiromitsu Takagi with AIST (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at w3.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1053. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 241 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62023 (W3C Jigsaw Proxy Server Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9914), SecurityFocus (BID 5506†), OSVDB (4015†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4607†). The entry VDB-18966 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
