A vulnerability has been found in W3C Jigsaw 2.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Host Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in W3C Jigsaw Proxy Server before 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary script via a URL that contains a reference to a nonexistent host followed by the script, which is included in the resulting error message.
The bug was discovered 08/10/2001. The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2002 by Hiromitsu Takagi with AIST (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at w3.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1053. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 241 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62023 (W3C Jigsaw Proxy Server Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
