A vulnerability was found in Fetchmail up to 6.0.0. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function getmxrecord of the component DNS Packet Handler. The getmxrecord function in Fetchmail 6.0.0 and earlier does not properly check the boundary of a particular malformed DNS packet from a malicious DNS server, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) when Fetchmail attempts to read data beyond the expected boundary.
The weakness was presented 10/11/2002 by Stefan Esser (e-matters) (Website). The advisory is available at linux-mandrake.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1175. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74169 (Red Hat Fetchmail Buffer Overflow and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
