Details
A vulnerability was found in Jetty Http Server up to 4.0.x (Web Server). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the file cgi-bin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the CGIServlet for Jetty HTTP server before 4.1.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via ..\ (dot-dot backslash) sequences in an HTTP request to the cgi-bin directory.
The bug was discovered 10/01/2002. The weakness was shared 10/11/2002 by Matt Moore with WESTPOINT as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1178. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86520 (Jetty Servlet Engine Arbitrary Command Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 4.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10246), Exploit-DB (21895), SecurityFocus (BID 5852†), OSVDB (8948†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6359†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
