A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5/6.0 (Mail Client Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component S/MIME Parser. The manipulation of the argument from with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the S/MIME Parsing capability in Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a digitally signed email with a long "From" address, which triggers the overflow when the user views or previews the message.
The weakness was presented 10/28/2002 by Noam Rathaus with Beyond Security as MS02-058 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com.
