Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Balabit syslog-ng 1.4.0 Rc3 up to 1.5.15. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Template Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Balabit Syslog-NG 1.4.x before 1.4.15, and 1.5.x before 1.5.20, when using template filenames or output, does not properly track the size of a buffer when constant characters are encountered during macro expansion, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code.
The weakness was shared 10/28/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1200. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15012 (Debian DSA-175-1 : syslog-ng - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.4.15 or 1.5.20 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10339), Tenable (15012) and SecurityFocus (BID 5934†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
