Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IBM AIX 4.3.3/5 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component TCP Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
IBM AIX 4.3.3 and AIX 5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption or crash) via a flood of malformed TCP packets without any flags set, which prevents AIX from releasing the associated memory buffers.
The issue has been introduced in 09/01/1999. The weakness was published 10/28/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1201. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1153 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10326), SecurityFocus (BID 5925†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22057†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
