A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component File Download Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was published 12/13/2005 by Jakob Balle with Secunia Research as MS05-054 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2829 since 09/07/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2751 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20299 (MS05-054: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (905915)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100032 (Microsoft Windows Cumulative Update For Internet Explorer Missing (MS05-054)).
Applying the patch MS05-054 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3972.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23448), Tenable (20299), SecurityFocus (BID 15823†), Secunia (SA15368†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015349†).
