Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a web page with embedded CLSIDs that reference certain COM objects that are not intended for use within Internet Explorer, aka a variant of the "COM Object Instantiation Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-2127.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2005 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2831 since 09/07/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2228 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20299 (MS05-054: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (905915)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100032 (Microsoft Windows Cumulative Update For Internet Explorer Missing (MS05-054)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4890.
