Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ISC BIND up to 8.3.3 (Domain Name Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component SIG RR Element Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
BIND 8.x through 8.3.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via SIG RR elements with invalid expiry times, which are removed from the internal BIND database and later cause a null dereference.
The weakness was presented 11/29/2002 by Neel Mehta with ISS X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1221. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10886 (ISC BIND < 8.3.4 Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15029 (ISC BIND 8 Invalid Expiry Time Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10333), Tenable (10886), SecurityFocus (BID 6159†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1577†). See VDB-11 and VDB-19162 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
