FreeBSD 4.4/4.5/4.6/4.7 Subdomain Request denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in FreeBSD 4.4/4.5/4.6/4.7 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Subdomain Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

BIND 8.3.x through 8.3.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (termination due to assertion failure) via a request for a subdomain that does not exist, with an OPT resource record with a large UDP payload size.

The weakness was disclosed 11/29/2002 by Neel Mehta with ISS X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1220. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10886 (ISC BIND < 8.3.4 Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15028 (ISC BIND OPT Record Large UDP Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10332), Exploit-DB (22011), Tenable (10886), SecurityFocus (BID 6161†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-912†). The entries VDB-11 and VDB-19163 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
