Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component SIG Record Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in named in BIND 4 versions 4.9.10 and earlier, and 8 versions 8.3.3 and earlier, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a certain DNS server response containing SIG resource records (RR).
The weakness was released 11/29/2002 by Neel Mehta with ISS X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1219. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13765 (SUSE-SA:2002:044: bind8), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15040 (Sun Solaris Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in BIND and libresolv).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10304), Tenable (13765), SecurityFocus (BID 6160†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-911†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-19163. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
